Drawing Machines

Kitchen Melange is a series of drawings made using hacked cooking utensils as mark-making tools.

The process of making the images was an exploration of repetition and refinement. Though each tool only made one type of mark, understanding how to master the mark required patience and skill. Slight differences in machine height or angle produced varied brushstrokes. At the same time, an untethered paper allowed for a subtle shift of movement that made a delicate, circular movement unable to be replicated by hand. Identifying my preferences within this process allowed language to develop among the images. I wanted intentional interaction between marks and favored hard lines that followed a quiet rhythm. My final drawing session produced twenty-eight images, and understanding these preferences helped guide me in selecting these final four. So often, this process felt chaotic and overwhelming, but by eliminating variables, I achieved clarity within the images and understanding and control of the drawing tools.
